Hello and thank you our visiting our webpage.  I hope this site has been helpful to you and I look forward to meeting you in person.

The First United Methodist Church of Sachse is a place where you, your family, and your friends will be welcomed immediately upon your arrival.  From the first moments you arrive, you can expect to be treated with love, respect and friendship.

Next, you can expect to hear about God’s grace, the love of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit.  Then, you can expect to be invited to be a part of the community through Sunday school, worship, missions and whatever other ways you sense that God might be calling you.  You are invited to become involved in any or all of these things at your own pace.

I know all of this is true, because that was the experience enjoyed by me and my family when we first came here.

Once in a while, life offers us an event or an adventure or a fright or an excitement, and when we tell the story later, we hear ourselves saying, "I guess I was in the right place at the right time."  Once there was a person who was right where God needed him to be because his neighbor was in trouble.  His neighbor had been robbed and beaten and abandoned on the side of the road.  When we tell that story today, we call that person, "The Good Samaritan."
Once in a while, God puts us in place to serve in the same way.

See you soon.

Love,
Frank

Rev. Debbie Chapman
Director of Music Ministries
phone | 972.530.1005
email | music@sachsefirst.net

Rev. Debbie Chapman started with us on August 15 as our new Music Director.  Debbie is very excited to do ministry with you at Sachse First UMC. She has over 30 years of experience making music in the United Methodist Church. While raising her children, Debbie went back to school to work on her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance (Texas Woman's University) and master’s degree in sacred music, graduating from SMU in 2001. She was ordained a Deacon in Full Connection in June of 2002. For Debbie, leading music in the church is more than music making. It is ministry and is built on relationships. Music ministry is a way of connecting people with their gifts and graces so that they can grow spiritually and musically. As a worship leader, it is important to find ways to reach all people by using liturgy, visuals, songs and silence. Music enhances the spoken word and teaches scripture in a way that moves the soul.

Debbie has been active in the North Texas Conference, serving on various boards and was privileged to serve as Chair of the Order of Deacon from 2008 - 2012. She has chaired major music workshops and camps in the North Texas area, including events for Choristers Guild and the Greater Dallas Handbell Association. Her work includes children, youth and adults and music from all styles.
She is married to Paul and they have two married adult children and 5 grandchildren ranging in age from 1 to 23. Terry (43) sings and arranges barbershop music and Andrea (35) sings in the praise band at FUMC Melissa. She is also their director of children and family ministries. Paul is retired from the US Government and cares for his 96-year-old mother, Betty, who lives with them. Please join Debbie in making music at First Church Sachse!

Shelly Gonzales
Director of Diversity and Outreach
phone | 972.530.1005
email |  outreach@sachsefirst.net

Shelly Gonzales just completed a year-long chaplain residency at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, providing pastoral care to patients, staff, and family members. Her ministry there focused on listening, empathizing, companioning, and asking questions that helped people identify their emotions and beliefs so they could come to their own insights about themselves and/or their faith.

Before chaplaincy, Shelly served for four years as associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Weatherford, Texas. In that role, she preached about every six weeks, collaborated on worship design, assisted in leading worship, planned community-wide outreach events, led adult and youth Bible studies, and led the missions team. Congregational care experience included home and hospital visits, taking communion to homebound members, and ministering to people who were struggling.

In November 2015, God inspired and used her to start Difference Makers, an after-school missions ministry for elementary students that met once a week. At the time, our church was averaging about five kids a week in Sunday school and Wednesday activities. Difference Makers averaged 45 kids the first year, and 68 the second. In addition, sibling and parents of Difference Makers began attending and then joining the church.

Shelly earned a Master’s of Divinity from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in 2016. Before accepting the call to ministry, she had an award-winning career as a newspaper and magazine editor in Lubbock, Texas. Her community involvement and professional work resulted in awards as well, including being named one of the Top 20 Professionals Under 40 in the Greater Lubbock Area — Don’t ask how many years ago! — and the Kelly Pratas Award for outstanding local and regional service for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Shelly’s husband, Vince, serves various roles in The United Methodist Church, including the board of the General Commission on Religion and Race. The Council of Bishops has appointed him to serve as The UMC’s delegate to Churches Uniting in Christ, where he serves as the Racial and Social Justice Task Force chair. Vince and Shelly have two sons, 13-year-old A.J. and 11-year-old Max, and two grown daughters, Alex and Gabby, who live in West Texas with their families.
